When's the last time you colored?

Fortunate is the one that is present, intentional, and successful in their everyday lives; the one that is able to wear many hats (metaphorically speaking), do all the things, meet all the deadlines, and meet the expectations and demands of life… but when’s the last time you colored? Like, slowed down enough to enjoy an innocent, expectation-free (aside from staying in the lines and picking the best colors), childlike activity like coloring, watching your favorite childhood cartoons while eating a bowl of Frosted Flakes with ice-cold milk? Or when was the last time you stayed in your pj’s, wore fuzzy socks, had an easy start to your day, and committed to doing a puzzle, crossword, wordsearch, or read a book? How about taking a bubble bath, rubbing down in smell-good lotion, getting in bed, and giggling as you snuggled into the comfort of your bed as the coolness of the sheets came into contact with your skin? Just reminiscing about these things triggers strong nostalgia and causes a kid-like giddiness in me. My motivation is to facilitate reflection to each reader to consider the benefits of engaging in healthy distractions and giving yourself permission to temporarily rest… you know, like coming up for air since you’ve been hustling, grinding, working, going and going day after day. I’d like to encourage you to think of some of your favorite pastimes, hobbies, and seasons when you felt your best… when you’ve felt refreshed and rejuvenated. Then choose at least one thing to try and practice mindfulness as you engage in your chosen activity. Try to be fully invested in your activity. Breathe. Notice your body, notice your thoughts, notice your mood. Speak kindly to yourself and acknowledge your effort to engage in your version of youthful/innocent self-care. Look at that fire coloring page and gaze in awe of your masterpiece! Drink the rest of the cereal-flavored milk from the bowl! However and whatever you decide, take pleasure and pride in it!
